Spiritual Books for Kids: Part 2

Spiritual Books for Kids: Part 2

It’s been a long while since I’ve written on spiritual books for kids. I always appreciate a good book recommendation for my kids. Today, these books are not so much ‘spiritual’ in sense of New-Agey but more ‘spiritual’ in the sense of ‘living from your heart’. Not that I’m against the former.

The first book is Will You Fill My Bucket? Daily Acts of Love Around the World by Carol McCloud and Karen Wells. The book contains rhyming text featuring parents and grandparents sharing love with their beloved child in numerous ways. What’s spiritual about it? Love is the greatest quality of God and to give (and share) love, our greatest purpose. A few phrases from the book can give you a taste of it: “Will you fill my bucket and hold me on your lap? Will you fill my bucket and kiss me at my nap? Will you fill my bucket and push me on the swing? Will you fill my bucket and clap and dance and sing?”

Next, Baby Blessings: A Prayer for the Day You Are Born by Deloris Jordan. This book features an African American family from the time their son in born till the time he goes to school. The simple text is affirming and positive and says the things that would have been good for your parents to have told you, including, “You will touch the world in your own special way. We pray that you will always be kind. Remember to always believe in yourself. Always strive to do your best. Remember to look for the good in every day.”

The Secret of Saying Thanks by Douglas Wood is a book that reflects on the blessings of life. The book follows a girl and her dog in the morning light till the evening and reflects on all the wonderful blessings, from stones to trees to pets and family. From the end of the book, “The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time. The more we say thanks, the more we find to be thankful for. And the more we find to be thankful for, the happier we become.”

Finally, God’s Wisdom for Little Boys: Character Building Fun from Proverbs by Jim & Elizabeth George is a sweet, rhyming book that includes cute pictures and references to the Bible as each page encourages qualities such as being wise, thankful, responsible, brave and truthful. For an example of what you’ll find in this book: “Have you ever done wrong and wanted to lie, thinking a story will help you get by? Telling the truth is what God says to do. So always be sure you say what is true.”
