So, right now I’m reading Nurturing Your Child’s Inner Life by Mary Ellen Maunz and I thought you might enjoy hearing what this book is about and seeing if it is something you might like to read in its entirety. Mary Ellen starts out with saying that we meet our children’s needs, be they physical or mental or emotional. But what about spiritual? And what might happen – or is already happening – when children grow up without having this side of themselves developed, nurtured and addressed?
Mary Ellen then proposes that this spiritual life of the child is already very active, and we perhaps just don’t see it because we do not look for it. There is a funny quote about teaching religious doctrine that “no one seemed to think that children might already know God”.*
Mary also distinguishes between religion and spirituality, between a set of beliefs and an experience of life itself. As a distinguished Montessori teacher herself, Mary Ellen devotes much of the book to studying how the Montessori method can help children reach that inner connection.
That’s as far as I’ve got through the book but I can tell you that the chapters to come cover such things as Stages of Development, Life Before Birth, Falling in Love with God, Nurturing Spirituality, The Child’s Own Approach to Spirit, Using Parables to Reveal Spiritual Mysteries, Learning about God, Building Virtues and Spiritual Preparation for Parents and Teachers.
If I have piqued your interest in this book and you wish to know more you can pick up a copy today from our online store.
It looks like it’s also available elsewhere in Spanish for our Spanish speaking friends!
