The Universal Great White Brotherhood—
with an Introduction to Earth’s Ancient Hero
Loving Overseers
The Universal Great White Brotherhood is a heavenly association of saints and sages from all paths and religions. Also included in this Brotherhood are angels and cosmic beings. The saints, teachers and holy ones who once walked among us and now serve through this body are called ascended masters.1 According to the Master Maha Chohan2 in a HeartStream from June 1, 2008, the Universal Great White Brotherhood “is the authority and governing body which represents the Godhead in this system of worlds.” White in the title doesn’t refer to race but to the light of purity that emanates from each member.
As explained, the ascended masters have walked the earth and other systems of worlds and have earned their ascension3 through lifetimes of striving. While in embodiment, the ascended masters learned to walk with God intimately day by day, facing each challenge and test with grace and faith until their souls rose in victory beyond any necessity to reincarnate. It could be said that they had evolved to such a level of compassion and understanding that the Earth could no longer hold them. The victory of the ascended masters is meant to be our own. Each of us is a candidate for membership in the Brotherhood.
Other Members of the Universal Great White Brotherhood
Some members of the Universal Great White Brotherhood are in embodiment, having earned the right to membership because of lives of selfless service. Other members of this association are of the angelic realm and cosmic beings of various descriptions who have never entered the rounds of rebirth but hold a great balance for earth, sponsoring certain individuals and lending assistance when invited through prayer into our lives.
Upliftment of Mankind
The Universal Great White Brotherhood exists to uplift mankind, to help us know the same mastery over human suffering that they have achieved. They exist to help us experience the ultimate joy of attaining divine reunion.
As long as mankind has populated the earth and other planets, the Brotherhood has existed. Among the Brotherhood’s august ranks in more recent millennia are well-known ascended masters such as Confucius, Gautama Buddha, Kuan Yin, Lord Maitreya, Mother Mary and Jesus. Each of them came to assist a body of believers along the way, to raise our eyes and hearts upward even in challenging and dark times. They came with messages of hope and keys to successful, joyful living. They came to bring transformation and liberation from a limited understanding of our true nature.

Intervention of the Brotherhood on Behalf of Earth
The teachers and masters who have come to us under the auspices of the Brotherhood over thousands of years were part of a complex and glorious plan to help planet Earth in its darkest hour. Out of profound love for the children of God on Earth but also undying affection for their Guru, a master of great attainment, these teachers came…on a rescue mission to save a planet doomed to destruction.
In the numberless interventions of the Universal Great White Brotherhood on behalf of mankind, this chapter in Earth’s ancient history exemplifies the reason-for-being of the Brotherhood. It is the story of Sanat Kumara.
Savior of Saviors—Sanat Kumara
In the Buddhist tradition, Sanat Kumara is referred to as Dipamkara.4 Called the “Ancient of Days”5 in the book of Daniel, Sanat Kumara was the first Savior of planet Earth. Many millennia ago from his home on Venus, Sanat Kumara observed in profound sorrow the darkness that had enveloped this planet. It was a time when man had descended into a dense, animalistic consciousness, even bearing in outer form an apelike appearance.
There was no spark of love in any heart upon the Earth. Heavenly councils at the highest echelons of the Brotherhood, therefore, had decreed the dissolution of this planet. The repercussions of such a decision would be felt by every soul incarnate on Earth and those awaiting incarnation who had made negative karma on this planet in previous embodiments. So the planet’s destruction would mean a great retardation of opportunity for Earth’s evolutions to balance their karma.
The burden on Sanat Kumara for the children of Earth was so heavy that he requested of the Council of the One Hundred and Forty and Four6 to be allowed to enter the planes of Earth in an attempt to reignite the spark of God, the threefold flame,7 within the hearts of the people. In heaven just as on earth, there is discussion and planning. In councils of the Brotherhood, teams of masters deliberate, consider options and listen to the ideas of one another before deciding upon a course of action.
Upon witnessing the great love of this master and hearing of his desire to relinquish the comforts of his kingdom and family to minister to the souls of a condemned planet, the Council of the One Hundred and Forty and Four granted Sanat Kumara’s request. But the story does not end there….
We Will Go with You!
When the word spread throughout Sanat Kumara’s kingdom that its leader would soon be departing, over one hundred thousand citizens thronged the courtyard and hillsides surrounding his home. A spokesman for the citizenry of Venus exclaimed, “O Ancient of Days, we have heard of the covenant which God hath made with thee this day and of thy commitment…. We will go with thee! We will not leave thee for a moment….”8 This spokesman was the great Eastern teacher whom we now know as Gautama Buddha. Among the first wave of four hundred beings that came with Sanat Kumara were the greatest spiritual teachers of this age.
The Way of the Universal Great White Brotherhood and the Ascended Masters—Sacrificial Service
When a heavenly being incarnates, accompanying that decision is the possibility of creating negative karma and the resulting entanglements in the rounds of rebirth and earthly suffering. And indeed this did occur among the first four hundred who came and then the next wave of 144,000 from Venus.
From the example of Sanat Kumara and those who descended with him, we understand the necessity of sacrificial service. We see through the examples of the members of the Universal Great White Brotherhood, who have suffered what we suffer and who have faced the challenges that we face, the workings of God through his Sons and Daughters, drawing us into a deeper relationship with our own divine nature.
Invoke the Masters and the Entire Spirit of the Universal Brotherhood
If you desire to realize your full potential and your reason for existence, if you want to experience an abiding peace and a love beyond human love, get acquainted with one or more of the ascended masters. It is they who are collectively the Spirit of the Universal Great White Brotherhood. It is they who will lead you all the way to ultimate reality.
To invoke their presence, just call them by name, talk with them as you would to any friend. Meditate upon them, giving them your attention and clearing your heart and mind so that they may commune with you. You can place pictures of them on your altar to assist in drawing their presence to you.

- The ascended masters are our elder brothers and sisters who have passed all major initiations of the spiritual path and graduated from Earth’s schoolroom, returning by free will to the heart of God through the sacred ritual known as the ascension. They are the saints, teachers and masters of East and West from all religions and cultures who stand in holiness before the presence of the one God.

- The Maha Chohan, meaning the “Great Lord,” is the representative of the Holy Spirit to the Earth. It is his office to assist mankind to contact the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth.

- The ascension is complete liberation from the rounds of karma and rebirth. In the ascension process the soul becomes merged with her Solar Presence, experiencing freedom from the gravitational, or karmic, pull of the earth and entering the bliss of beingness within God’s eternal presence of divine love.

- The threefold flame is nothing less than God, blazing within our physical form, individualized in each person. It is placed in the secret chamber of our hearts at birth and is withdrawn at transition. Not one but three identifiable plumes—blue, yellow, pink—as seen in the heart of the lower figure of The Chart of Your Buddha Nature rise from the same source—a tiny sphere of white Mother Light energy. The blue plume blazes as the will of God. It is also the flame of protection as well as divine direction. The yellow plume represents the right use of knowledge of all kinds, a wisdom and discrimination based on the standards and principles of truth. The pink plume represents love—adoration, devotion, compassion—the very nature of God.
